Healthy Lunch

On Friday 11 March we went to Lincoln New World and bought the ingredients for our healthy lunch. We had a great time creating our menu and then making our sushi, pizza, vegetable and fruit platters.
A big thank you to Kyle and Helen Burnett from the Lincoln New Word for sponsoring our Healthy Lunch.
Also a big thank you to Robin, Liz, Gail, Amanda and Ruth - the terrific parent helpers and to Mrs Graves for her great organisation.

Where am I?

Guess where it is on PhotoPeach

Craft Day

Craft day was about how to make sculptures of re-cycled stuff.  Look at some of the pictures.

Craft Day

This is a lifter made by Zoe T. She made this for Craft Day.

Craft day is when people make things to present for the judges who award them with stickers.

Check out what we got up to on Craft Day.

Bye to our new friends

We would like to say how wonderful it was to have some new visitors to our class and it was very sad to say goodbye to them last week.
We would like to wish Harrison, Marit and Henry all the best back at their schools and we hope you will keep in touch with us.

Healthy Hearts

While some enjoyed having a touch of the beef heart others got to use the stethoscope to listen to their own heart working.

Dissecting a Heart

For homework this week we had to draw a diagram of the heart. On Friday, Alice T very kindly bought along the real thing - a beef heart.
Mike Hamlin came along and explained how this heart was just like ours but only a lot larger. He cut it open so we could see inside it.

The Challenge of Fitness Testing

Today Mr Hamlin came to school to test our fitness. First our height and weight were measured. Then we went around a series of testing stations, and then we had to run around the field twice.

The tests we had were testing our strength, flexibility, speed etc: Pull-ups, sit-ups, standing jump, sprinting, and jumping up. It will be interesting to see how our fitness improves in the next few weeks!

Healthy Food

For our inquiry we are learning all about food and exercise.
A dietician came to our school and talked about the food pyramid. The food pyramid is a triangle with fruit & vegetable, milk & dairy and meat and alternatives.
The dietician gave us two pictures of different types of food. Then we had to guess where each picture went on the food pyramid.
My two pictures were corn and fish. The fish went in the meat and alternatives, and the corn went in the fruit & vegetables.

Did you know?

Did you know that there is a type of fruit called Kiwano?
You should have at least 2 pieces of fruit a day?
You should have at least 3 vegetables a day?
Did you know a serving is the size of your hand?
Did you know that you get fibre and carbohydrates from breads and cereals?
You get fibre and vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables?
You get protein and iron from lean meat, chicken and seafood?

Room 5’s Food inquiry

For Room 5’s Inquiry we are learning about food. First off a dietician came and told as about the different food groups:
cereal and bread
fruit and vegetables,
milk and dairy,
meat and alternatives,
and junk.

After that we each got handed a cereal box. Liz (The dietician) told us to look at the back and read the salt, sugar and fat content. Then we played a game, we had to close our eyes and she would call out an energy drink and we put our hand up for the one we thought had the least amount of sugar.

Earthquakes

September 4 2010 and Tuesday 22 February 2011 have been the scariest thing that anyone has ever been through in Christchurch. The earthquake and after shocks have happened due to earth movement.
Earthquakes are caused by two plates under ground coming together and crashing. Plates under ground can cause mountains to come up to the surface. Some earthquakes are caused by land moving along together and the land jams like a door. The land tries to break free but it can’t. Then all of a sudden the land breaks free and it causes the land to shake which makes an earthquake.

The Earthquake Story

The 6.3 Earthquake on Tuesday the 22nd of February was really scary and I thought it was an aftershock. I really had so much sadness in my heart so then I prayed that there would be no more aftershocks.
This week it is my birthday and I have met a new girl to our school named Marit. Marit has come to our school because of the earthquake. My friend Alice was playing with Marit then I joined with them. Then the next lunch me and Marit played with each other. It is nice to meet some new friends.

New School

I have arrived at a new school, I only knew 1-2 people at this new school.
My school is in the town and is very different from this school. It was my first time in a country school in 5 years. I come from St Andrews College which is badly affected by the Canterbury Earthquake and I will have about 1 month off school.
The things I like the most about this school are friends, playing hockey and games and I also like that you can bring your scooter, skateboards and rip-sticks!

4 September Christchurch Earthquake

The earth rumbled,
And the ground shook.
For some people,
It was like out of a book.
Some buildings were ruined,
And some were gone.
Some businesses retired,
Some were done.
On the news,
The people said,
“We’re glad that no ones
Actually dead.”
But, now it’s over,
No need to worry.
I’m sure it won’t
Come back in a hurry...
