Encouraging our birds!
Claudia, Heather and Fran have been busy with their inquiry this term. They have made this video to show what they have done to make a difference to the birds that live outside our classroom windows.
The girls want to attract more birds to this area. They have visited an expert to get ideas of what sorts of things need to be planted to encourage the birds to move in. They have some plants and now they are going to finish clearing the area and plant the new plants under the tree canopy.
Ellie's Cooking Homework
For homework I made a chocolate cake and got Karen to cut the cake for the class for morning tea. Ineka thought it was delicious. I enjoyed making it because I got to make a mess.

Bryn's Bird Feeder Design
Bryn has designed and drawn a bird-feeder that has special features to protect birds. Here are his designs, and you can listen to Bryn as he explains the different parts.
G for Gargoyles
This is Bryn's subject for alliteration. He looked up all the 'g' words and he discovered some interesting information about gargoyles. Isn't his drawing amazing! You can click on any image to see a larger view of it.

Last week Karen bought along a kimono that she had bought back from Japan.
Here are photos of Libby in the traditional dress. I think she looks very cool.

Art Work
We have been working hard on our pastel and collage pictures about New Zealand animals (although we did have a stray snake appear).
I think some of the children have done a great job with their colouring of their animal and they look very realistic.

LEARN
It was really interesting that Carol showed me this LEARN video yesterday.
I was really impressed with the idea and today I found The Ins & Outs had also one on their blog called MOVE - great photography. You will be able to see the other Vimeo at the end of this one.
How do they get their message across?

Take a look at Room 9 Einsteins Blog and their Go! Animate about World Environment Day.
Could we use this idea in our inquiry?

Ipads and Animation
Yesterday afternoon a group 10 children from Room 5 got to have fun making animations on the ipads with Carol.
We learnt how to set up the camera and use 'onion skinning' to check we hadn't moved the object too far. We also learnt we had to take a lot of photos to make even a small animation. The children cooperated in pairs to develop their own animations, creating the storyline, titles, voices and sound to go with their animations.
See below our afternoon of great work. We think we would like to try more of these in the classroom.

Today we made Kimono Doll Bookmarks with Karen. The kimono is a traditional dress of the people of Japan. We are enjoying the story Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr.

Ellie's Birthday Present
Ellie got a new kitten from the RSPCA for her birthday. She has called it Maestro. She chose Maestro because he played with her finger when she poked it in the cage. What a great idea to get your kitten from the RSPCA Ellie.
Hope you had a great birthday Ellie.

Mya's Cooking Homework
Mya took on the homework challenge to make something using fruit or vegetable. She went and picked her own apples and then turned it into yummy apple crumble - delicious Mya. You are very lucky to have your own apple trees to pick your apples from.
